When I first came to Torino one of the most common questions that I got from my friends and family back in Canada was "Did you meet anyone yet? " The truth is that I arrived during a time when many of the locals were away on holiday, students were out of school, and were outside the city visiting their families for the summer, and many of the new aupairs, tutors, and nannies, would only arrive once the new school year would begin.
At that point, I had to get a little creative and figure out ways to meet people. Below are some of the ways that I met new people around the city.

- Meetup: An online social networking site which is great if you want to meet people at a local event, or to even meet with expats. I discovered a group in Turin, which contained English speaking foreigners and locals who went to "meetups" to practice their English speaking skills, or to just relax and enjoy a beer.
2. Facebook: I found quite a few Facebook groups for people who had just moved to the city. If you try searching for your city or town name in the search bar, you might be able to find everything from social events to Facebook groups for expats.
3.Couchsurfing: -Note to all my friends and family back home, no, I did not crash on some strangers couch!
Couchsurfing has options where you can search for nearby events that are held by members. If you want more of a one on one interaction, and you're uncomfortable with the idea od sleeping on a stranger's couch, the site has the option for people who just want to "meet up" and view the town from a local's point of view.
4. Tinder: Yup, Tinder, the dating app. And, no, I have not hooked up with anyone on there. If you want to see how bad a Tinder date can get, have a look at my last post ;)
I have given up on the dating app, but because I made my intentions clear before meeting anyone from the site, I did get to meet a few guys who were excited to meet a Canadian, and show me around Torino.
WARNING: If you're going to go forward with the Tinder/dating site option, proceed with caution. Ask tons of questions to find out what are the other person's intentions, and always make sure to meet in a public place.
What about you ? Have you had any luck at meeting people abroad with the options mentioned abroad ? Are there any crazy or interesting methods that you have used to meet people ?
