A Small Update From Time Spent In The Mountains
The weather in Torino the past few weeks has been ridiculously hot and humid. Luckily for me, my host mom sent the children, their nonna, and I to the mountains in Bardonnecia. Two things are guaranteed when you go to the mountains with 2 children and an Italian nonna: 1) Being in the mountains is the best way to escape the summer heat!! (It actually feels like the last few days of summer, where you need to put on a jacket, but you just don't want to because you're in denial that summer is ending!! You know the feel right ???) The second thing which was guaranteed for me when going to the mountains was that when you get sent up with an Italian nonna, it's guaranteed that I'll eat well. :)
Around the month of July is when most children will come up with their parents or grandparents to Bardonnecia to escape the heat and city life to relax in the mountains. There are plenty of activities that have finally opened up again to accommodate those families who are visiting. Most parents will sign their children up for tennis clssses, mountain biking, gliding and so many other sports in Campo Smith. This is where I usually take one of the host children to play or to practice some English in the park next to Campo Smith.
Food
In the town center of Bardonnecia there is the main street known as Via Medail, which is filled with little shops, restaurants, and bakeries. One popular bakery with tourists is Ugetti. One pastry that it seems to be known for is called "krapfen". What is a krapfen you might ask ? Well after discussing it with a few people, I came to the conclusion that it is similar to a donut. So you may be wondering, who goes to Italy and eats donuts ? Well a girl needs variety and needs to try something new after all the pasta, pizza, and gelato that I've tried. I set out to try a krapfen on a Saturday afternoon. I was told to go early because they only have them in the afternoon, and they sell out quickly. There wasn't anyone waiting in line when I arrived, however, I did notice that some people who were passing by the bakery kept looking inside to see if they had put out on the counter yet. So what was the the result after I finally tried one ? It's not in the shape of a donut, more like a donut ball. They come in 3 different flavours which include chocolat, cream, and jelly. WARNING: It's fresher then any donut that I've ever tried and it can be addicting!!!
That is all for now folks, I need head back to the city soon though because this city girl needs to head back to the beautiful city of Torino because that's what city girls do! I'll keep you posted on my next adventure where I will be spending a few days in Campobasso!!!
